Report on YouthSen Activities 2002/2003
The year 2003 has been a busy year for the Senegalese YouthCaN cell. There have been some interesting activities in the course of the year. In fact this is the first year important activities have taken place. The members have been thrilled to take part in these activities. Many students have joined the cell and are eager to participate.

Three main activities have taken place in the course of the year: a youth competition about environmental issues where the topic was water, a source of life, one hike to the turtles village and another hike to the Pink Lake.

1- The environment competition

It was organized by the ministry of environment in the Douta Seck Cultural Centre in Dakar. The topic was : water, source of life. Nearly all the schools in Dakar had taken part in this competition. The students had to produce drawings related to the importance of water and its use, or write poems related to the topic.
Two of the members of the Youth cell from the Martin Luther King Girls School won prizes at this competition.

One of them had produced a nice drawing which was kept by the jury and the other one had written a beautiful poem. In this photo we have the two prize winners . Ndeye F. Gueye is on the left and Bintou Konate is the girl on the right. The event had taken place before the ministre of environment and some important personalities dedicated to environmental issues. Our winners were very proud for their performance and the whole school was proud. So were all the YouthCaN members of our cell .

2-The hike at the Pink Lake
The Pink Lake is a unique natural phenomenon in the whole world. As the name suggests, the color of the water in the lake is pink! Some people say that this pink color comes from the density of the salt in the lake. YouthSen intends to conduct some research on this phenomenon this year in order to determine exactly the origin of this pink color. Many people visit this lake when they come to Senegal. It offers beautiful sights. Here are some of the pictures we took.

3-Hike at the turtles village
It is located some kilometers in the vicinity of Dakar. It is a natural reserve where turtles are kept and protected. YouthSen went there on a hike. All the members of the cell were absolutely glad to discover this beautiful area. We took some pictures to share with our YouthCaN family.
This village is now highly protected to keep away poachers who might destroy this treasure.
The student holding the turtle is Adja Fatou, one of the two YouthCaN members who participated in the YouthCaN meeting in New York at the American Museum of Natural History.

4- Perspectives for the year 2003/2004

For this year we want to organize hiking to the Goree Island where the slaves used to be kept before being sent to the New World. We also intend to hike to the zoo of hann where there exist wild animals, and to the Djoudj Natural Reserve for Birds. This site has been selected for the beautiful environment sights it offers.

We are also planning to go out and meet other youth from some other schools in the regions of Senegal to make YouthSen a more dynamic reality.

We will conduct some research action in order to determine the origin of the Pinkness of the Pink Lake. This might be very important.

A committee has been set to reflect on the feasibility of all this so as to plan the activities on the right period.
