YouthCaN Report from Berman, Ghana: sanitation and health
Breman, a community in Ashanti Region in Kumasi in Ghana is so polluted. The Improper disposal of both solid and liquid waste has made the town so filthy for human habitation yet the town is over crowded with both humans and buildings. People dump refuse. faeces and other waste materials around indescriminately. The surroundings are littered with papers, plastics polethene bags etc.

The improper disposal of waste affects the community so much that illness and epidemics like malaria and cholera are very common in the area. Bilhazia is also a common problem due to the contamination of water bodies in the area. The rotten waste materials also produce stench which endangers peoples health.

Their gutters are choked with refuse since there are no proper refuse dumps. There are also a few public toilets arround and woefully indequate for the inhabitants. People will have to join a long queue before getting the chance to the public toilets. Those who cannot stand the long queue deficate arround. The toilets are also not kept clean and these have caused a lot of maggots which later turn into flies which invade poeples homes. The feaces on the ground too are washed into the nearby streams whenever there is rainfall and poeple in these areas also use these waters for domestic purposes.

Poeple in the communities have built their houses near to the streams and when it rains, the streams are flooded and water enter poeples homes. Some poeple die through this anytime it occurs in the night.

These conditions have made life in Breman very difficult and fatal. But the most unfortunate thing is that the inhabitants do not realise that their lives ares at risk.
