Here is a story from an educator at an environmental center in Brazil. They are working to protect the Golden Lion Tamarin, a little primate. Check out this report about their recent workshop and visit their web site to learn more! It is in Portuguese, but if you know Spanish you can figure most of it out! :)

The teacher Janaina from Corina Halfeld Elementary School, developed activities about native animals of Atlantic Forest. The students produced many drawings (as you can see in the photo).
Hi YouthCaNers,

Our last workshops were very good.
The teachers did a lot of activities about animals of Atlantic Forest: texts, games, music.

This month the teachers are developing activities about problems and conservation actions to Atlantic Forest... some schools are going to produce seedlings and help in the corridors project of GLTA.

Some information about our teacher training project:

The Golden Lion Tamarin Association (AMLD), is a Brazilian NGO has been developed a capacity building program for educators with the participation of 20 teachers from 14 schools of the municipality of Silva Jardim.

The participating educators are informed, motivated and guided to develop Environmental Education projects in their schools seeking Atlantic Forest conservation.

The support of AMLD continues from the planning of the activities to their completion and evaluation. The educators involved in the project have participated in periodic workshops held in the Education Center in the Poço das Antas Biological Reserve.

This teacher capacity-building effort has been supported by WWF-Brasil, Disney Wildlife Conservation Fund, Lion Tamarins of Brazil Fund and by the General Public Education and Environmental Department of Silva Jardim.

It would be wonderful if we had information in Portuguese or Spanish from YouthCaN. Our teachers could read and participate by themselves.
Um abraço, (With a hug)
Patricia Mie Matsuo

If you go to http://www.micoleao.org.br/index_layout.htm and click on "Mata Atlantica" in the Navigation bar on the left, you will get a map of the Atlantic Forest and see what little remains of the forest habitat of the Golden Loin Tamarin. These youth are working on a very important project!

The teacher Marly from Alfredo Backer Elementary School made a great project about the native fishes of Juturnaiba Lake (very close to the school). The students made some interviews with old fisherman to learn what are the native fishes of that Lake. They also produced many posters with figures and phases about the environment.
