The Peaks of Lebanon! March 24/25/26, 2002
Hi from all the USL students! We had a wonderful ski trip this winter, and the whole time we were surrounded by breathtaking view of the various mountains up there. So, we were all pretty inspired by the beauty of the peaks. Here are some poems we wrote, as well as some information on the nearby mountain peaks where we live-Lebanon! Enjoy!

These poems are by Krystle Nicolas, Gr. 10:

AL-ARIZ
The beautiful mountain just staring at the sky, The beautiful sun just shining in your eye, The beautiful children playing in the snow, But, most of all, the beautiful skiers skiing in a row!

SNOW
The ice is cold,
And has no smell,
It's white in winter,
And has its own story to tell,
But in the summer, it's gone away,
But still retains its vitality in some way!

This poem is by Elyse Nicolas, Gr. 11:

WHO AM I?
I feel the roughness of the boards on my back, I hear the happiness all around me,
I just keep thinking that it is such a pity that I will be gone in the summer, Many people will also be gone since they come to see me, Still others will stay,
For I am the snow that will return some day!

This poem is done by Hala Alyan, Gr. 10:

WHO OWNS ME?
Bright sun rays shine generously over the mountain peak, As the shimmering snow reflects its magnificent cedar trees, The peaks us no words and yet they speak, Sharing and inviting, but through it all they remain free; Majestic peaks outline the endless sky,
Allowing us the freedom to use and climb, But never truly conquered, no matter how you try, For they are their own master and slave, 'till the end of time!

Krystle, Hala, and Elyse are all students of the Universal School of Lebanon

Here is some information we retrieved about various mountain peaks in Lebanon:

The mountains of L ebanon are locally known as Arz Araab (The Cedars of the Lord). Cedars covered the whole of Mount Lebanon in ancient times, what remains of them today have survived all of these years. All ancient civilizations that flourished in this area used the wood from cedar trees to build temples, palaces, ships, and houses.
The highest peak in Lebanon is Qornet Essawda, which stands an impressive 3,088 meters high. The village of the cedars, over 2,000 meters in altitude, is a very picturesque ski resort with hotels, chalets, and ski lifts. On your drive to these beautiful peaks you will take note of rock-cut churches, monasteries, springs, and waterfalls. In only 30 minutes you can drive from the crest of the mountain down to the bottom of the steep-sided qadisha grotto, a natural cavern with stalactite and sta lagmite formations.   The Cedars are a historical landmark for Lebanon and their dwindling numbers only make them all the more important. Nowadays, the cedar tree, majestic and indestructible, is the emblem of Lebanon and adorns the Lebanese flag!

THANK YOU!!
