Within the area covered by this listing, this species is known to occur in: Connecticut, District of Columbia, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Vermont, West Virginia

We do not see many efforts to help the cougar. The human activity that threatens them is farmers trying to keep them away from their livestock. (As well as less space for them).
