For sets of students later than 12 please register for workshops in the larger spaces as indicated by the **. If you have a large group and can break them up into groups of 12 or less, you can sign up for some of the workshops in smaller spaces.

** Millennium Development Goals - Only with your Voice! **

Queens High School for the Sciences at York College, New York, USA

In 2000, the United Nations developed a set of eight goals to be achieved by 2015, such as halving poverty and ensuring environmental sustainability. These goals were proposed to meet the needs of some of the poorest countries in the world. By educating students about the MDG’s they too can take action in achieving these goals for a better world.

** Relight NY **

Relight NY, New York, USA

Relight NY is tackling global warming and improving our environment by supplying low income families in NYC with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) to replace incandescent bulbs. This helps families save money reduces carbon emissions and waste. We hope to inspire all New Yorkers to switch to CFLs. Changing a light bulb to a CFL is an easy way all people, especially kids, can decrease their ecological footprint and live more sustainably. We care about global warming because our generation will inherit this climate crisis and we want to start solving it now.

** COEP: No Child Left Inside **

Miami Country Day School, Florida, USA

Experience our treks across the USA from a hikers’ perspective through our Comprehensive Outdoor Education Program (COEP). We will share our school’s adventures about our academic curriculum and weekend treks, as well as our adventurous summer program, through the use of digital photos and “stories from the trail.” Learn some hands-on camping tips, survival skills, popular campfire recipes, and facts about poisonous plants and venomous reptiles and insects.

** Texas Institute for Young Scholars Winning Projects **

San Angelo Independent School District, Texas, USA

The 2008 winners of the Texas Institute for Young Scholars competition will showcase their Research on aspects of the global water crisis. Teams worked with university experts to plan and implement solutions to such issues as fresh water shortage, the effects of water solution on animals, and irrigation vs. water conservation.

What’s In That Water?

Elementary Workshop Montessori School, Delaware is part of the Adopt-A-Wetland Program. This is our third year in the program. This year we have been doing regular water testing of the Gambacorta Marsh in New Castle, Delaware. We would like to share with you what we have studied about the marsh and give the opportunity for you to test water. Why do people test water? What do they learn from these tests? Please bring some water from your local area to the workshop and we will test the water together and share the results.

** Contaminated Sediment in NY Harbor: Problems and Solutions **

The Urban Divers, Harlem River Ecology Center, New York, USA

One of the biggest environmental challenges in New York Harbor lies beneath it…underwater. A Youth Intern from the Urban Divers Estuary Conservancy’s Harlem River Ecology Center will give insight into the problems, and models for solutions. The project will also tap upon a few related underwater research projects conducted by The Urban Divers over the course of 10 yrs of providing its resource and services to NY Harbor.

** Air Pollution in NYC **

The students of BWL will share the research they have been conducting on air pollution in NYC. Through a PowerPoint presentation the students will walk thought their findings about particulate matter, ozone and acid rain levels in 7 different locations around the city.

LaTeen Journalists Chronicle the Building of a "Green" School

Casey Middle School, Colorado, USA

Students at Casey Middle School in Boulder Colorado have joined together with LaTeen Magazine to work as journalists investigating and writing about the redesign and building of a new Casey Middle School.  The building has been awarded LEED Certification (LEED stands for Leaders in Environmental and Energy Design). In this session come find out how you can learn to write like a journalist and get the word out about important pro-environmental projects in your area.

Rainforest of the Sea

Green Ribbon School– Video Conference

The Green Ribbon School Pilot Project gives students the opportunity to assess the “greenness” of the environments in which they spend many hours of the week - their schools. This is the second phase in the development of a program (The Green Ribbon School Award) to recognize schools worldwide which meet certain environmental standards. The goal of the project for this year is to determine (through the input of participating schools) whether the criteria developed by middle school students during the 2006-07 school year are all inclusive and yet attainable by schools throughout the world. This session will show how you can participate in the Green Ribbon School Project

How to Organize a Recycling Program in your School
