How Much Can Cars Pollute? By Aziz and Joey from AIS People like cars for many reasons, such as because they dont have to wait for buses. They can anywhere they want after work. They dont have to sit or stand in a crowd or sit next to someone they dont like. And finally, cabs and buses dont always go where you want them to. Although there are lots of reason people use cars, cars play on important role in pollution. An internal combustion engine uses fuel by mixing it with air and then burns it. When this happen, some exhaust gases are left over. They go out the tailpipe and into the air. Smog is what happens when the exhaust gases mix with sunlight. The more people drive, the more smog cars produce. Smog makes people sick, increases problem in lungs and is one of the many reasons why kids get asthma. It can hurt kids' lungs and can cause heart attacks for adults.
One of the problems with cars is the burning of fuel which produces carbon dioxide in the air. The extra carbon dioxide helps trap the sun's heat on ear th. There are several fuels used in Lebanon. We are very concerned with the use of leaded fuel because it affects the health of citizens, children in particular. We read a lot of articles on the effect of lead on our health and we enjoyed re ding the study of grade 8 students from last years Planetary Notions. We found out that lead inhaled shortens memory and attention span and may cause digestive problems. Other serious problems that adults might come across are high blood pressure and nervous disorders as well as complications during pregnancy. Children, especially those under six years old are at high risk. It affects childrens behaviors, causes learning disabilities and disrupts the normal process of developing cells. Children exposed to high amounts of lead can also damage their central nervous systems, causing brain damage and development problems when learning in school, and growing. They also experience problems with their hearing and often encounter headaches. We will send our questions to grade eight next week; we have also created a survey that we will run in our community to see if people are aware of the dangers of using leaded fuel. Aziz and Joey
